A Vitamin D Supplement May Lower Heart Attack Risk

Supplementing with vitamin D may lower the risk of having a major cardiovascular event by 9% for older adults, some recent research has found. Heart attack risk, specifically, was reduced by 19% for those taking vitamin D versus a placebo.

The study included over 21,300 older adults aged 60-84. They were divided into two groups: one that took a 60,000 IU vitamin D pill once a month and one that took a placebo. The average period of intervention for both the vitamin D and the placebo group was 5 years.

Overall, the reduced risk of a major cardiovascular event for the vitamin D group was small— with the exception of heart attacks— and there was no risk reduction for strokes. There were also some limitations to the study, including the fact that some participants took statins or other heart medications, which may have impacted the results.

The researchers believe more studies are needed to confirm the effects of vitamin D on heart health. However, there is other research that indicates vitamin D may have other positive effects for older adults, including lowering inflammation levels.

Fast Food Consumption Linked to Liver Disease

Consuming 20% or more of daily calories from fast food is linked to a moderate increase in liver fat, a new study has found. For those with obesity or diabetes, the same amount of fast food has been linked to “severely elevated” levels of liver fat.

“Healthy livers contain a small amount of fat, usually less than 5%, and even a moderate increase in fat can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,” said Ani Kardashian, MD, lead study author. “The severe rise in liver fat in those with obesity or diabetes is especially striking…”

The study involved around 4,000 adults and defined fast food as any meal from a drive-through restaurant or a walk-in restaurant without wait staff. Results showed that even consuming one meal a day from fast food could negatively affect liver health if that meal accounted for at least 20% of total calories for the day.

“Our findings are particularly alarming as fast-food consumption has gone up in the last 50 years, regardless of socioeconomic status,” said Kardashian. The study authors also noted that diet changes are currently a first line of treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease but may serve better as a prevention method.

6 Incredible Health Benefits of Avocados

Avocados, which are considered a fruit, have been surging in popularity in recent years. This isn’t a bad thing, since a single avocado packs in more potassium than a banana plus a good amount of vitamin C, B vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats (including vitamin E). Studies have linked eating avocados regularly to better heart, eye, and brain health. They are also a surprisingly good weight loss food (despite the high calorie content) and a great source of antioxidants. (More)

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Help Protect Lung Function

Omega 3s, which are found most abundantly in certain types of fish and algae, are known to possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Now, some new research has shown that they may protect against lung function decline, most likely due to their ability to fight inflammation. One specific omega 3 fatty acid— docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)— was highlighted as having the most protective effects for lung health. (More)

Short Daily Walks Can Lower Depression Risk, Improve Symptoms

You may already know that exercise can improve your mental health, but sometimes starting an exercise routine is daunting. The good news is researchers have found that simply taking a 20-minute daily walk (5 days a week) can significantly reduce the risk of depression and lessen symptoms. This new research specifically focused on the older adult population, a group that often struggles to exercise for the current recommended amount of time per week. (More)

Lack of Sleep Makes Exercise Less Beneficial for Your Brain

Regular exercise is a documented way to help protect brain function as you get older— but there may be a “catch”. A new study has found that not getting enough sleep (i.e., 6 hours or less per night) can actually negate the brain benefits of exercise. In fact, participants who were physically active but fell short on sleep had faster cognitive decline than their less active counterparts. The bottom line: Get your 6-8 hours of sleep and then exercise. (More)

9 Warning Signs of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and catching it early is key to successful treatment. Some of the early warning signs to watch out for include a new spot appearing on your skin and a change in the size, shape, or color of an existing spot. Be particularly suspicious of a new growth that has a raised border or looks scar-like and does not have a well-defined border. Also, any spot that is consistently itchy, painful, bleeding, rough, or scaly could be cancerous. (More)
